High school agricultural students represent the next generation of agricultural producers and are the primary pool of potential agricultural majors at two and four-year colleges and universities.
These materials need to be educational and engaging to assure widespread adoption. The final goal is develop and deliver an improved version of the FARRM simulation game and agricultural economics curriculum.
Project Methods Oklahoma teachers are required to take at least five hours of "in-district" training annually and at least 75 hours of training over a 5-year period. Our plan will offer training to partially fulfill both of these requirements.
First, workshops will be offered through local Career Tech centers. In summerwe will hold two workshops with approximately 30 invited ag teachers at each workshop. Also, the group will be asked to help identify new subject areas where material is needed.
From this group, five teachers will serve as an advisory and evaluation board. This group will serve as liaisons between ag teachers and OSU faculty, be the first to be trained in new materials and will provide feedback. In summerwe will hold a series of workshops around the state.
The workshops will be offered in modules. The emphasis is on how to utilize the game to teach core agricultural economics concepts, such as marketing, budgeting, economic decision making, and the use of financial statements.

The Agricultural Economics faculty will be offering a one-day professional development opportunity for high school ag teachers.
The training will cover standard farm management concepts, including budgeting, marketing, financing, microeconomic principles and financial statements. Professional development workshops will be offered jointly with Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership Department to improve visibility with ag teachers and assure that they receive professional development credits.
Workshops will be offered in July and with target enrollment of teachers per year. Instructors will leave with an improved understanding of agricultural economics concepts and curriculum needed for classroom use.
By combining the two approaches of reaching ag teachers, we leverage project funds, products and personnel to increase the size of the audience and beneficiaries with minimal additional funding. Most of the materials needed for the on-campus opportunities will be paid for using previously committed departmental funds.
Additionally, several Agricultural Economics faculty members have committed to teaching at the summer on-campus workshops at no cost to this project.
